Shin splints describes a variety of generalized pain that
occurs in the front of the lower leg along the tibia (shin bone).
Shin Splints are considered a cumulative stress injury because
they often occur after repeated stress or jarring of the bones,
muscles and joints without proper conditioning or recovery
between workouts. The pain of shin splints is typically located
on the outer front portion of the lower leg (anterior shin splints)
or pain on the back inside of the lower leg (posterior medial shin splints.

Causes The pain of shin splints is caused by trauma to either the
muscles or bones of the lower leg.

Muscle trauma (exertional compartment syndrome) is often
related to overtraining or excessive running on hard surfaces.

Repeated use makes the muscles swell and puts pressure on the
fascia that covers the muscles in the lower leg leading to pressure and pain.

Bone trauma to the lower leg can result in stress fractures.
Constant pounding the leg bones may cause microscopic cracks
and fractures in the tibia and fibula (lower leg bones). Rest is needed to
repair these cracks, but without adequate recover, these cracks
continue to grow and become a fracture. The result is acute pain
and a long recovery.

Beginning runners are at increased risk of shin splints and stress fractures
because they are not used to the high impact running has on the muscles
and joints of the lower leg and foot. Running on hard surfaces (especially
with worn, poorly cushioned footwear) increases stress on the muscles,
joints and bones and is another cause of shin splints. Excessive pronation
or other biomechanical problems can increase the risk of developing shin
splints. Other causes of shin splints include:

-Improper stretching
-Lack of
warm-up
-Training too hard
-
Increasing mileage too quickly
-Running or jumping on hard surfaces
-Muscle imbalance between the posterior and anterior leg
-
Worn out shoes that do not have enough support
-Running on a tilted or slanted surface
-Other biomechanical issues

Symptoms
-Pain located on the medial (inside) part of the lower leg
-Pain is often worse with running or other weight bearing exercise
-Pain increases after running on hard surfaces
-An aching pain may linger after stopping activity
-Pain increases with activity
-Pain increases with running, jumping, hill climbing, or downhill running
-Calf muscles may be tight and inflexible

Treating Shin Splints
Rest is the best treatment for shin splints.
For immediate relief use the R.I.C.E. treatment method
for controlling pain and inflammation.

Returning to activity must be done gradually with non-weight
bearing activity (cycling, swimming) to your workouts until pain-free.

Strengthening and stretching exercises are helpful.
The ankle injury rehab program can also be used for shin splint rehab.

-Tape your shins to reduce stress
-
Wear proper footwear
-
Replace shoes as needed.

Returning to activity must be done gradually or you risk re-injury.
Change your routine and cut your exercise time and intensity so that
you have no discomfort before, during or after exercise.

If your shin pain continues after three or more weeks, you should
consider seeing you physician for a proper diagnosis.

OWWW. my achy breaky legs.

fuu-yoh. i think last tues' trg was the toughest fitness yet.
my body's still not back to its form, like... sour sour-
ah, you know what i mean luh. lol,

we did like whoa. alot of sprints, then the jog sprint killer,
then the stridings, and more sprints... then push ups sit ups,
and drills.

had stitches half way man. pain pain pain.
hm.
talking about pain and stuff, i used the net to research on the
well, common running injuries since so many people are getting
injured..

Ankle Sprains
Ankle sprains are often caused by the twisting or rolling of your
ankle and result in swelling and pain above and around the ankle.

Black Toenails
Runners, especially those training for long-distance events,
can suffer from black toenails, caused by the toes rubbing up
against the front of the running shoe. A blood blister forms under
the toenail and the nail eventually falls off.

Blisters
While not a serious injury, blisters – those fluid-filled bubbles
of skin on your feet – can be painful and keep you from running.

Illiotibial Band Syndrome
Marked by a sharp, burning knee or hip pain, Illiotibial Band
Syndrome (ITBS) is a very common injury among runners.

Muscle Pulls or Strains
Muscle pulls and strains are common and annoying injuries
for runners, marked by pain and tightness in the affected muscle.

Runner's Knee
A common complaint among long-distance runners,
runner's knee feels like a soreness around and sometimes
behind the kneecap.

Plantar Fasciitis
Heel pain in runners is usually caused by inflammation of the
plantar fascia, a condition known as plantar fasciitis.

Shin Splints
One of the most common injuries for beginner runners,
shin splints are characterized by pain in the front of the lower leg.

Stress Fractures
Stress fractures, or tiny cracks in the surface of a bone,
are serious running injuries that requires immediate treatment.

those are the common injuries. well, i've been a regular to the sinseh, and the doctors
for sprained areas, and stuff. till i've lost hope on the medical field..
okay lah, not so serious, but yeah.
so research again, and ta-dah!

Most running injuries respond well to R.I.C.E treatment:
Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, and take about two to three weeks to heal.
It's time to visit a sports medicine professional if your pain lasts
longer than that, or if you have any of the following symptoms:

-severe pain in a joint or bone
-pain radiating to another area of the body
-injury is very painful to the touch
-significant swelling at the injury site
-difficulty moving the injured part.
-numbness, tingling or weakness in the injured area

about the R.I.C.E treatment, here's the more detailed version.

Rest is often the easiest and most effective treatment for
common running injuries. Take a couple of days off from running --
it may be all you need to heal your injury.

Ice the trouble spot with an ice pack or a bag of frozen veggies
for 20 minutes, every 4 to 6 hours. Try to ice the affected area as
soon as possible once you feel pain, and immediately after a run if
you are running with an injury. Heat should only be applied to an injury
after the inflammation is gone, usually after about 72 hours. If your
swelling has gone down significantly, but there's still some inflammation,
try alternating heat and ice after a few days of ice-only treatment.

Compression limits swelling and can provide minor pain relief.
You can wrap the affected area with an Ace bandage, but don't make
it too tight. If you feel throbbing or excessive pressure, loosen the bandage.

Elevate the injured body part -- try to get it higher than your heart,
if possible. In most cases, you can do this by lying down and propping
the injury up on pillows.

hope it'll help those who read it! =))

and now i'm enlightened. hehs

whoa. hope tmr's trg, er, i mean today would be better.

why am i caring for what i've done/am doing?

i feel like im tied down. i cant do the things i wanna do.
seriously speaking, im like very unhappy with myself
for the things i have to deal with. when actually i can dont do.
what the hell?!

why why why did i make myself so miserable?

why does things have to happen all so quickly, all simultaneously?
how i wish i could split/duplicate myself to suit others, and better,
to multi-task.

im so sorry to the things ive missed, forgone for others, and sorry to
people who felt that im irresponsible. i really dint mean to irk you.

The Leap Years [29/2/2008]

"a saint once decreed,
that a man must agree,
to a woman's proposal today,
give me a sign,
whether to meet me at eight,
at the same place you sit,
and fulfill the tradition of
Febuary 29th..."
"We make a promise...
we meet every febuary 29...
same place, same time..."
this show was fabulously produced.
i really loved the show! i dont know why the ratings was so poor,
but i really feel that Singapore should come up with more of
such movies, rather than talking about politics, taxes, fines,
and stuff. This movie showed that there are more impt things,
other than the normal life. In singapore that is.

touching touching.

with a beautiful lead actress and a hot hunky lead actor,
the show could never go wrong. ;)
love it. ALL SHOULD WATCH IT! =)
